Health Insurance Marketplace

There is a new way to buy health insurance: the Health Insurance Marketplace. The marketplace is designed to help you find health insurance that fits your budget. Every health insurance plan in the marketplace offers essential health benefits, including doctor visits, preventive care, hospitalization, prescriptions, and more.

Depending on income and some other factors, your monthly premiums may be reduced by advanced tax credits. Your out-of-pocket costs also may be subsidized. But these cost reductions are only available if you buy from the Marketplace. Professional insurance agents, navigators and certified application counselors are available to assist.

You must sign up for an individual insurance plan Nov. 15 through Feb. 15, or you may need to wait another year to buy insurance on the Marketplace. This is called open enrollment, and you can get coverage effective Jan. 2015 or within a few weeks after that, depending on when you sign up, with no exceptions for pre-existing conditions. If you aren’t eligible or don’t want tax credits and subsidies to help pay, the same plans can be purchased directly from the insurance companies that sell insurance on the Marketplace. But you must sign up during open enrollment. Those with employer-based coverage may have a different open enrollment period.

If you already have insurance on the Marketplace, during open enrollment you can go online to renew or change your coverage and update your eligibility for tax credits and subsidies. Whether your individual coverage is on or off the Marketplace, you should receive a notice from your insurer telling you if your plan will be automatically renewed and informing you of changes in rates, benefits and cost sharing. The notice also will show your options to change coverage and eligibility during open enrollment.
